Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
