A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
